For the first time since the promulgation of Ordinance XV D — the rule laying down the procedure for dealing with cases of sexual impropriety which came into effect in 2004 — Delhi University’s Executive Council on Monday terminated two teachers on charges of sexual harassment.
Gurcharan Singh Arshi, professor in the Punjabi department, was sacked nine months after the university received the inquiry report against him. Several students had complained that he used sexually repugnant examples and innuendoes in class.
The second teacher to be sacked was Atul Razdan, lecturer in Mathematics department of south campus. The committee had recommended a four-month suspension, but EC increased the quantum of punishment as he was also found guilty of physically molesting a student.
